Psychology is the basis
Alpacas, increasingly popular in Poland and Europe, originate from the distant Andes. They are bred primarily for their luxurious fleece and friendly nature. However, few owners remember that their natural habitat is the Altiplano Plateau, with its desert vegetation, located at an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level. These charming animals therefore have completely different requirements and habits.
Camelidynamics, a method developed by Marty McGee Bennett, helps understand the unique psychology of alpacas. Its primary goal is to reduce the stress associated with training and maximize the satisfaction of both parties.
– Each Camelynamics training session is a huge dose of knowledge and energy – says Joanna Najbar, owner Coniraya farm. – Thanks to tchem, we better understand the way our animals think and behave, which is inthe foundationof every breeding program – she added.
What can you learn from the Camelidynamics alpaca course? Breeders will discover, above all, that alpacas are incredibly family-oriented and protective creatures—they’re willing to fight to protect their young. In any other dangerous situation, their only defense is flight.
Another important issue is the problem of loss of balance. As a result, improper capture can disrupt their sense of security. This, of course, is only a fragment of the knowledge necessary for daily work with these animals.
Camelidynamics in practice
Theoretical knowledge must be put into practice. Camelidynamics training involves several days of intensive instruction with an instructor in a group of about a dozen people. The course takes place in a magical space for alpacas, the so-called catch pens. These are small enclosures where the animals feel at ease, yet their handlers are able to quickly catch them. It’s worth noting that stress-free catching is one of the most useful skills learned by participants.
The schedule also includes training in how to put on and lead a halter. Knowledge about proper handling of young animals, nail trimming, and administering medication is also extremely useful.
– Camelidynamics provides a solid foundation for every breeder – says Joanna Najbar, an alpaca breeder from Sieborowice near Krakow. – Without it, everyday care for animals would be difficult, and a visit to the vet or a trip to a mating or exhibition would be associated with enormous stress. – she explains.
Depends mostly on the person
How long does it take to master the principles of Camelidynamics? While the course itself lasts approximately 2-3 days, it’s up to the breeder how quickly they can implement the new principles. A positive attitude and patience are key.
– During the training, trainers teach that peace is the basis of success – Joanna Najbar emphasizes. – If we feel like we’re losing our mental balance, it’s best to leave the stall, take a deep breath, and return when we’re calmer. Only then will working with the alpacas be a source of joy for both of us, and that, after all, is our primary goal.
If you feel you lack knowledge or need additional support, you can consult Martha McGee Bennet’s book “Camelid Companion” or re-enroll in the training. The most important thing, however, is to consistently but patiently implement the knowledge you’ve acquired and continually deepen it.
