Peruvian Hemingway G171

Peruvian Hemingway G171

Date of Birth: 1991

Color: White

Description:

The Peruvian Hemingway G171, named after Ernest Hemingway, ranks third in the Registered Offspring category (410), and was owned by Northwest Alpacas, Pacific Crest Alpacas, Morning Sun Alpacas and Timberland Alpacas, all from Oregon.

Mike Safley named Hemingway and Caligula as the two most important males for alpaca breeding in the US.

Hemingway was probably born in 1991 and his last registered descendant was born on August 9, 2009, when the male was 17 years old.

In 1996, at the Estes Park Show, Colorado and the AOBA Breeders Association National Show in Denver, same state, Hemingway’s offspring won first place in the White Young Male and Female Classes out of 25 competitors.

At five years of age, the Hemingway fleece averaged 17.8 micrometers, standard deviation 3.7, coefficient of variation 20%, 1% fiber over 30 microns. At the age of 16, its fleece had an average diameter of 23.7 μm!

In Hemingway’s offspring, the most important thing to appreciate is the “cohesiveness” of the fleece, meaning low rates of standard deviation and coefficient of variation – more than usual fibers in their fleece have a diameter close to the mean, and this feature is usually inherited.
