main image: Alpacas – new type of breeding in Poland. Part III. Reproduction
Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) are classified as South American camelids. Alpacas are bred mainly for their fleece, which is much warmer and more pleasant to the touch than sheep's fleece (1, 2)...

They are fascinating with their appearance, intelligence and calm disposition, which is why they are becoming increasingly popular. It is estimated that the largest population of alpacas in Europe is located in Great Britain and amounts to about 35 thousand individuals (1, 3). In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in alpaca breeding in Poland. Alpacas first appeared in our country in 2004, and their current population reaches about three thousand individuals (2). Alpacas are gentle animals that easily establish contact with people, which is why they are used in therapy for people with disabilities, especially children (alpaca therapy). Additionally, they are a source of non-allergenic wool. Due to the fact that the reproductive physiology of camelids differs from other farm animals, the authors decided to present the specifics of alpaca reproduction.
